A lot of things about Starla screams “Mary Sue” (heck, even her awful name), but I really try to avoid that when I actually write her. I even sometimes make fun of some of her cliche personality traits and plotlines. But I still worry that she may come across as one, so unless she’s been to a place for a while, I tend to hesitate to bring her out.
Though I was talking about something similar to someone else (don’t remember who) and I brought up the fact that you can take the worst prompt in the world and still make a good story if you write it well. Question is whether or not I qualify.
